Environment - Invasive Species Flowering Rush - Lawrence O'Keefe Author Eastern Ontario Lawrence O'Keefe has initiated a program to eradicate the flowering rush invasive species from the Napanee River. The invasion has increased rapidly in the last 3 years and in a few spots in the river it exists from bank to bank making passage by canoe difficult. Spraying is planned for 2026. Lawrence's presentation goes through information about flowering rush as well as the steps required to plan and conduct a spray program. It is a time consuming process involving many groups and can be a significant cost. Lawrence has spent about 500 hours on this already. lawrence@friendsnapaneeriver.ca www.Click Me (1)
Environment - Threats Road Salt - Dr. Shelley Arnott Queens University Eastern Ontario Dr. Shelley Arnott is researching road salts toxic toll on our ecosystems. Widespread use of road salt for deicing has caused increased chloride concentrations in lakes near urban centers and areas of high road density. Chloride can be toxic, and water quality guidelines have been created to regulate it and protect aquatic life. However, these guidelines may not adequately protect organisms in low-nutrient, soft water lakes such as those underlain by the Precambrian Shield. arnotts@queensu.ca youtube.com/watch?v=6zax8mJyuDI Click Me (0)
