Arden Footbridge Restoration - Part I There have been various footbridges spanning Arden Creek ever since the founding of the village. Prior to 2019, the most recent was built in the mid 1980s by Lyman Wilkes assisted by a crew of local youth and funded by a grant from what was then Kennebec Township. That bridge washed away in the spring 2014 flood. Spear-headed by Glen Matson of GE Matson and Sons, action began in the fall 2018 to design and construct a new footbridge. With help from the Township of Central Frontenac, the steel beams needed to span the creek were sized, ordered and purchased with funding provided by the Friends of Arden. Upon arrival, the steel beams were stored at the Matson property. In the spring of 2019, the Friends of Arden launched a community fund raising campaign for the Restoration of the Arden Footbridge. A fund-raising poster was developed by Allison Fletcher. This campaign netted $13,190.00, and included donations from the Kennebec Recreation Committee, Arden Seniors, Kennebec & District Historical Society, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 334 and the Kennebec Lake Association, plus numerous community donors. Work began in earnest in August 2019. The Matson family provided machine services (large and small high hoes, backhoe, tracked loader and skid steer) to excavate the two footings, place the gravel and concrete, move and place the steel beams, form removal, backfilling and grading. They also built the south approach to the bridge, provided gravel and steel, plus welding and steel fabrication services, assisted with the bridge decking installation and purchased the red steel roofing for the footbridge.
Arden Footbridge Restoration - Part II Thousand Islands Concrete provided in excess of 18 cubic yards of concrete for the north and south footings and abutments at a 50% rebate. Looby Construction who were building the new Salmon River Bridge on Hwy #7, donated all the lumber and plywood for construction of the forms for the footings and abutments, the vulcanized rubber pads on which the steel beams sit and provided equipment loans. Roger Scott of Majar Contracting spear-headed the form construction, concrete placing and finishing, provided advice during the bridge construction and designed and built the north ramp to the bridge. Donations-in-kind from these companies exceeded $10,000.00 while many Friends of Arden community volunteers assisted with the project planning, fundraising and construction work. As of December 2020 the Arden footbridge construction has been completed; total cash costs are $20,600.00. This was a true community project.
